AUTUMN-WINTER 2011/12 HAIR TRENDS

It’s that time of year again – the turn of a new season, which gives us the chance to experiment with a new selection of exciting hair trends.

To inspire you, Bad Apple Hair has picked our top five trends for the season ahead, with tips on how to achieve the look easily at home.

1. PONY TAILS
The trend: This catwalk trend is one of the biggest looks of the season, with models strutting down the runway at Alexander Wang and Emanual Ungaro, to name just a few.

Get the look: Bad Apple Hair’s Rob Turner says: “The perfect pony tail requires perfectly clean hair, so start by washing your locks. Straight hair works best for this style, so blow-dry with Tigi Catwalk Sleek Mystique Blow Out Balm. To create the pony tail, place your fingers at the crown of your head and gather a large selection of hair. Use a soft cushion brush to get rid of tangles and secure with a bobble. To hide the bobble, take a small amount of hair from the ponytail and wrap around the band, securing with a pin.  Finish with a spritz of hairspray – Bed Head Masterpiece works well for hold and shine!”

2 – VIXEN RED
The trend: This colour trend has been a big hit at Bad Apple Hair salons as we head into autumn. There’s a red for everyone – from cool metallic to warm sumptuous hues.

Get the look: James Shaw says: “There are so many different hues of red, so any hair colour can go for this trend. At Bad Apple Hair, we’re fortunate to have a great product range from Kerastase, Tigi, L’Oreal and new range Kin, which help to maintain colour at home. Colour fade is always worse when the hair is in poor condition, so investing in a good shampoo and conditioner for bright reds is worthwhile. Finally, I’d really recommend opting for an in-salon treatment to lock in the colour and add shine – I personally favour Kin Colour Treatment or Kerastase Pixilist Ritual.”

3. SHORT HAIR
The trend: This celebrity trend has been lead by The Saturday’s Frankie Sandford, with the Bad Apple Hair staff seeing a big increase in requests for shorter styles, with precision hairdressing taking centre stage.

Get the look: “The first thing to consider is whether you are emotionally ready for short hair,” explains Rob Turner. “If you feel ready to take the plunge, the good news is that it works on all hair types, from straight to curly. If you hair has more movement, the style will appear more textured! I’d recommend blow-drying your new style with L’Oreal Professional Playball Motion Gelee, which gives hold, but great movement.”

4. FULL ON BLONDE
The trend: The ‘full head bleach’ is back – from iced and dusty, through to warm and peachy! This is another salon trend, which has been very popular over recent weeks in Bad Apple Hair.

Get the look: James explains: “Natural hair is much easier to lighten than coloured hair, so bear this in mind when considering an appointment, as coloured hair may be more expensive and timely to transform. For maintaining the colour at home, I recommend that you speak to a professional for an analysis of the hair – as locks could be lacking either protein (if the hair is weak) or moisturise (if the hair is dry).

5. NATURAL HAIR
The trend: Forget lengthy styling - this catwalk trend, seen at Proenza Schouler, is all about letting hair’s natural beauty take centre stage. Think clean, simple, and natural.

Get the look: “This is the easiest style to achieve,” explains Rob, “but it requires hair to be in the best possible condition. I’d recommend treating yourself to a Kerastase Nourishing In Salon Ritual every time you visit the salon to have your hair cut. One of the best ways to let your hair’s natural beauty do the talking is to leave it to dry naturally – this might sound obvious, but it works! For a finishing product, try Tigi Bed Head Hard to Get – a soft paste that will add texture and take away the fluffiness.”

SPRING-SUMMER 2011 HAIR TRENDS

SPRING SUMMER 2011 HAIR TRENDS

Dedicated follower of fashion? The time has come to turn your attention to a whole new season of hair trends…

Right on cue, Bad Apple Hair has picked five top catwalk and celebrity hair trends for Spring / Summer 2011 to inspire you, with tips on how to recreate the look in the salon and at home.

1. LOOSE WAVES

The trend: This was a big seasonal catwalk trend, seen at Rodarte, Basso & Brooke, Burberry, and Osman Yousefzad. It’s relaxed, feminine, and easy to style – so perfect for summer holidays and laid-back days at home.

Who is suits: “This look works best if there are layers cut into your hair – especially if it is naturally straight,” explains Bad Apple Hair’s Pippa Crellin.

Get the look: Pippa continues: “To style at home, start by applying a thickening product to damp hair, such as Bed Head Superstar Queen for the Day Thickening Spray, and blast hair with a hairdryer on a low heat, scrunching the hair with hands until it’s dry. Take random sections of hair and bend them around your straightening irons, letting go of the hair as it’s pulled through – this will create loose curls, without them being too tight or girly. The trick is not to put a curl in the ends, as they need to be straight for this look to work.  Repeat this all around your head, bending hair in opposite directions for a more natural look. Finish with Tigi Curls Rock Amplifier to tame frizz and hold the look.”

2. THE PIXIE CROP

The trend: This celebrity trend is gathering pace, with Emma Watson, Michelle Williams, Halle Berry, and Keira Knightly all recently rocking cute pixie cuts on the red carpet.

Who it suits: “This look suits every hair type, but how it’s cut is important”, warns Pippa Crellin

Get the look: “Those with thick hair should opt for an undercut, as it gives the illusion that you have less hair. Finer hair types can get away with stronger, blunter lines. A consultation with your stylist will determine which is best for your hair type,” explains Pippa. “This is a very easy look to maintain at home – your stylist will give you tips based on your hair type. Make sure you visit the salon every 4 to 5 weeks to keep the cut looking its best.”

3. THE BALLERINA BUN

The trend: Oscar- winning film Black Swan has inspired the fashion world, with Herve Ledger, Malandrino and Sophie Theallet all sending models down the runway with perfect ballerina buns.

Who it suits: “You need to have hair long enough to create a sleek, neat ponytail, which can be twisted into a bun,” explains Bad Apple Hair’s Aid Tams.

Get the look: “Making your ponytail as sleek and clean as possible is the first – and most important – step to re-creating this look, so don’t rush it,” warns Aid. “Start by pulling hair back with a brush, finishing with a comb to create a shiny, bump-free ponytail – it can be as high or low on the neck as you want. It’s worth using a little Bed Head Head Shrink Gel to control the hair. Once secured, take a Hair Doughnut Ring (which can be bought in most Boots Stores Nationwide) and place it over the ponytail. Finish by taking sections of hair and wrapping them around the doughnut, securing with grips and hairspray.”

4. COLOUR CREATIVE

The trend: This season, the stars are experimenting with colour – with names including Cheryl Cole, Alexa Chung, and Rachel Bilson all dying their locks a rainbow of bright hues.

Who it suits: “Colour suits everyone!” says Pippa Crellin. “On blonde hair, bright colours will be more dramatic, whilst darker hair will be given varying degrees of tint. Talk through your ideas with your colourist before taking the plunge!”

Get the look: Pippa continues: “Milkshake shades are very popular in the salon at the moment – pinks, peaches, and lilacs. Whatever shade you decide, the golden rule is to use a colour-friendly shampoo and conditioner at home – this will prolong your colour until your next salon appointment. To make the colour really pop, it’s also worth considering a salon hair treatment – you’ll really notice the difference.”

5. THE BIG 70’S-STYLE BLOW DRY

The trend: The Spring/Summer 2011 catwalks took a step back in time to the 1970’s, with big blow-out curls seen at shows including Marc by Marc Jacobs, Vera Wang, Topshop Unique, and Julien Macdonald.

Who it suits: “This is a really glamorous look (we call it the ‘Red Carpet Look’ at Bad Apple Hair) but it isn’t easy to recreate at home – so it’s best suited to those who are experienced with a brush and dryer” warns Aid Tams.

Get the look: Feeling confident? Aid advises: “Start by applying Kerastase Volumactive Conditioning Mousse, before drying hair by pulling the brush right from roots to tips for maximum shine. For the next step, work with two brushes; rolling sections of hair around one brush and leaving it secured at the roots, before repeating with the second brush, and starting again with the first. One brush should always be in your hair, so you’ll be constantly switching between the two. If this sounds too complicated, you can use heated rollers after drying hair – but make sure you apply in a layered brick-style formation to prevent gaps and give a full, balanced 70’s style!”
